Funding Close-ups - Worthing & Adur Fund 2011

Worthing Kids & Dapper Snapper
Grant: £500 from Worthing & Adur Fund, November 2011

Conference giving information to parents / carers of children with Downs Syndrome and other additional needs

Worthing Kids and Dapper Snapper was formed from the merger of two groups, Worthing kiDS a Downs Syndrome support group and Dapper Snapper – a swimming group for children with special needs. Children with any additional need and their families can be members.

The group is run by a committee of parents, they have parties, trips, summer picnics, sensory sessions, weekly swimming lessons, visiting speakers, coffee mornings, and last year a Junior fireman’s course. They are just about to start their own dance and drama group.

“The very kind donation from the Worthing & Adur Fund is going towards our information day, which will enable parents to learn about what is available in this area and also listen to talks from experts that can help them deal with their own child’s particular needs. There will be a chance for parents/carers to meet and socialise, and also talk one to one with the speakers. Thank you so much for your grant, without it our information day wouldn't have been possible.”
Lydia Wilson, Information Officer

Worthing Creative Dance

£366.50 from the Carpenter Box Fund, November 2011

Dance Club for older people requirung funding for hire of hall, dance teacher and publicity

“Without the generous grants we received, the club would have come to nothing. We thoroughly enjoy our weekly dance sessions and we are attracting gradually more and dancers. We have received favourable comments about the friendliness of the group and that other fitness-related activities have not been so successful.”

West Durrington Phoenix Youth Group
Grant:  £870 from Worthing & Adur Fund, November 2011
£1,100 from the Carpenter Box Fund, November 2011

A new drop-in youth club for young people aged between 12-16 with weekly meetings, outings and trips in the holidays at a subsidised cost

On behalf of all Phoenix staff and young people, I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has funded us. In September 2011 we saw a real need in our community to set up a 12-16 drop in youth group, this has proved to be very successful and have an average of 20 young people attending each week so far.

We have already taken the young people on a 4 day residential, asking for just £40 per child and we have another one set up for the end of March to Kingswood in Kent. We have also taken them to Thorpe park At Christmas we went ice skating, which part of the grant went towards.

“At the moment we have professional artists from the group Skeleton Cru, on site as part of a community re decoration project, decorating our building, this is being run by a group of our young people and is fantastic.
Thank you for all your support which is helping to make our hopes a reality.”
Laura Scott, Secretary

The Joyfuls
Grant:  £500 from Worthing & Adur Fund, November 2011
£366.50 from the Carpenter Box Fund, November 2011

Older People’s Club requiring funding for speakers, venue hire and general running costs

The Joyfuls is a social group for older people to help combat loneliness, members range from 60 to those in their 90’s. It has been running for nearly 20 years and meets once a fortnight in Lancing. They try to provide interesting speakers and activities for their members including film shows and quizzes. A number of the 30+ members are disabled and so help with travel costs through grant funding is much appreciated.

“Thank you so much. I am sure a big cheer will be heard from all the members attending our Christmas Party at the wonderful news of this funding. We are truly appreciative of the support from the Carpenter Box Fund & Worthing & Adur Fund at Sussex Community Foundation and of the hard work of all who administer them. As Mrs Santa I will no longer have to be a Scrooge!!”
