After a successful run at the Underbelly’s Circus Hub, Edinburgh this summer, Jacksons Lane presents Lost in Translation Circus The Hogwallops on its UK tour.

Thrillingly spectacular circus skills blend seamlessly with physical comedy, clowning, juggling, theatrical storytelling and slapstick in this colourful, loud and funny dramatisation of the domestic adventures of a chaotic, dysfunctional family of misfits.

The Hogwallops are a vulgar, grotesque family who constantly bicker, scheme and play practical jokes on each other. Their crazy home resembles an adventure playground where the ordinary inevitably becomes extraordinary! Everyday activities take on extreme forms, simple tasks such as hanging out the washing become a clothes fight of swinging, flying bodies and fabric. Dinner time becomes a teasing game of animalistic juggling and a cooking lesson takes on dangerous proportions with household furniture stacked to the roof in a most precarious balanced fashion.

Fast rising UK based contemporary circus company Lost In Translation display heart stopping virtuosic skilful aerial and floor acrobatics. An original live score contributes to the mix creating a quirky and comic family show in the true sense. A treat for the eyes and ears with thrills, gasps, laughs and drama - there’s plenty for both adults and children to enjoy.

After the opening performance on Friday 8th July there will also be a post-show Q&A with Adrian Berry, Artistic Director of Jacksons Lane, which is free for ticket holders to attend.

Jacksons Lane is one of the UK’s leading producers of new small-mid scale circus, and this is first time it is producing its own tour. Adrian Berry, Artistic Director, said “This year we turn 40 and have announced two major new circus commissions, so the news that we will be touring a large scale new circus production across England could not be better timing; for ourselves, the circus sector and audiences across the country. Lost in Translation Circus are one of the brightest and most exciting companies in the country and we are thrilled to be working with other venues to support their programmes, audiences and communities with performances and participation. Circus is everywhere today and we are thrilled to be at the centre of its amazing growth.”

Lost in Translation is UK based with a multi-cultural membership with strong links to Belgium Italy and Australia and performers originating from Italy, France, Ireland and Australia. Founded by circus space graduates in 2006 as an acrobatic duo, the company has toured widely throughout the UK and Europe ever since. Transformed into a full-blown ensemble in 2011 the company moved to Norfolk in 2013 to become company in residence with leading UK circus and street arts development charity Seachange Arts where they run the circus education program. Their strength, flexibility and experience are their greatest assets. LIT are children of the circus, ready to share their vision of a world full of fun, acrobatics and laughter.

The Hogwallops is a co-production between Jacksons Lane and Lost in Translation Circus, funded by the Arts Council England Strategic Touring Programme.

The countdown is on - in just two short weeks, Worthing Street Velodrome will open in Beach House Grounds.  Are you ready? “When Worthing Borough Council decided to bring the Street Velodrome to the town for 2015, we underestimated the impact that this free event would have,” comments Councillor Bryan Turner, the Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration. “The ballots for track time were over subscribed, the prom cycle attracted more people than we imagined and the buzz was absolutely phenomenal.  With such a success under our belts, it was only natural to make the weekend even bigger and better for this year.” With just a fortnight left until the event starts, the Borough Council’s organising team have been hard at work putting the finishing touches to the music stage, trade stands and catering village which will pop-up around the Street Velodrome during its residence in Beach House Grounds on the first weekend of July.  “This is just the sort of event which we want to see in Worthing,” Councillor Daniel Humphreys, Leader of Worthing Borough Council, adds.  “We proved the idea last year, now we’re back with another free-to-take-part, family-friendly, event making the most of our beautiful open space and beachfront.  “We’re grateful for the support of all our sponsors who have shown their faith not only in the event itself, but also in our ability to deliver yet another brilliant weekend for the town. “I can’t wait until that first klaxon goes off and the racing starts!” Sponsors Lancing College alongside Southern Rail and Worthing Homes have championed bringing Street Velodrome back to Worthing this July.  Through their support, the Borough Council has been able to expand the event to three days, offering a dedicated Schools’ Day on 1 July, followed by an expanded catering and entertainment offer on the 2nd and 3rd July. On Saturday 2nd July, event-goers can get onto the track and test their skills against the clock in a day of free first-come-first-serve racing.  All equipment and training will be provided by the Street Velodrome Pro Rider teams, so all you need to do is simply steel your nerves, get on the track and wait for the signal! The Sunday Peloton is also making a return this year, organised by local Worthing resident Jeremy Strutt (you can read a short interview with Jeremy on the Worthing Street Velodrome website - http://worthingstreetvelodrome.co.uk/interview-with-jeremy-strutt/) - what more excuse do you need to get on your bike and cruise to the Street Velodrome grounds on Sunday 3rd July? All of the details for the event schedule can be found on www.WorthingStreetVelodrome.co.uk - and the whole thing can be followed on social media.  Don’t forget to join in the social fun throughout the weekend on Twitter, using #WorthingSV16

Worthing & Adur Chamber of Commerce developed the Worthing and Adur Fund for the local area in 2011, in partnership with Sussex Community Foundation, a charity that develops and supports local giving.

The Chamber has worked with the Foundation to promote this permanent fund which, as it grows, will provide grants from the income it earns for charities and community groups, for years to come.

A number of local individuals and businesses became Founder Donors giving a minimum of £1,000 which provided the seed donations to establish the core endowment fund, and since then many more local businesses have contributed to ensure the continuing success of this worthwhile project.

    Recently a total of £3,838 was awarded between the following local groups;

Superstar Arts CIC, Maybridge Keystone Club, Heene Community Association, The Friends of Oak Grove College, Cruse Bereavement Care, Electric Storm Youth and CircusSeen.

Mike Metters, of Miller Parris commented “We are really proud to continue to be involved with the Worthing and Adur Fund. It is a real pleasure to see so many local organisations and community groups being able to benefit from the charity.”

On Thursday 30th June 2016, at 1700 hours exactly, the two communities of Worthing in West Sussex and the town of Richebourg in Northern France, will be conducting military services, to honor the 100th anniversary of the loss of 366 young boys and men from the Sussex.

During the now infamous WW1 Battle of Boar’s Head in Richebourg, the loss suffered by the Royal Sussex Regiment was so heavy that the conflict as since been referred to as ‘‘the day Sussex died’.

Representatives from Worthing, including Councillor Sean McDonald newly elected Mayor of Worthing, have been invited to attend the ceremony in Richebourg, which will mirror the ceremony in Worthing, as below.

Tthe Worthing Combined Ex-Services Association (CESA), in conjunction with Worthing Borough Council will be holding a Drumhead Ceremony outside Worthing Town Hall, Chapel Road.  This unique and historic service will be conducted by the Revd David Farrant, Hon Chaplain, Worthing C.E.S.A.  Members of the public are invited to attend.

A message to the people of Worthing from the Deputy Mayor of Richebourg will be read by Councillor Alex Harman, the newly elected Deputy Mayor of Worthing.

During the service 22 pupils from St Andrew’s C of E Boys school Worthing will lay crosses, each cross representing each of the 22 fallen soldiers from Worthing.

More prayers and hymns will follow and The Last Post will be performed by local 12 year old Grace Heath, from Sompting who is the official bugler for the CESA.  The Lancing Brass Band of the Royal British Legion will also be playing throughout the ceremony

Councillor Tom Wye, who has organised this event and advised on the service in Richebourg adds “The 30th June 1916 was the worst day of the entire WW1 conflict for Worthing, with at least 22 killed. Whilst other towns and cities commemorate the 1st July, the starting of the Battle of the Somme, it is fitting that Worthing commemorates and remembers those young men who paid the ultimate sacrifice. We will  remember each as an individual and will read out details of their all too short lives."

An exhibition to mark this anniversary will be open to the public, with free entry, from Monday 27th through to Friday 1st July 9am-5pm.  Worthing Town Hall foyer.

From flying trapeze classes and contortion on a Chinese pole to wheelie bin acrobatics and everything being flown on stage, there are thrills for the whole family during Summer of Circus at Worthing Theatres from July 8 to September 17.

The festival, which is aimed at long term circus fanatics, families and first time theatre-goers, unites a variety of non-traditional circus productions.

The launch on May 31 saw Acrojou opening the festival with their latest show Frantic. Formed in 2006 at the National Centre for Circus Arts, Acrojou combine circus, visual art, theatre, dance and engineering to create narrative at the rich meeting point of bodies, structures and materials.

The main festival opens with Lost In Translation’s production The Hogwallops, touring the UK for the first time, which is a chaotic and colourful tale of a family of misfits. Shortly after, the award-winning slapstick comedy Trash Test Dummies fuses acrobatics, juggling and stunt work to take the household wheelie bin to new heights.

Internationally acclaimed contemporary circus company Pirates of the Carabina bring Flown to the Pavilion Theatre, which mixes comedy and bold physicality with live music. This award-winning production ultimately ensures everything on stage is flown, even the band.

For theatre fans, razor sharp group Les Enfant Terribles, creators of London’s Alice Underground, return to Worthing with The Vaudevillains, a circus-inspired murder mystery set in The Empire music hall.

Gorilla Circus will be taking over Lancing Beach Green, with their huge flying trapeze rig. They will perform free live shows and for anyone with a taste of adventure, there will also be masterclasses which need to be booked in advance. Thrill-seekers can climb up three storeys and learn how to swing on one of the only flying trapezes in the country open to the public.

Critically acclaimed aerial theatre company Ockham’s Razor, who specialise in creating physical theatre, present their triple bill of Arc, Every Action and Memento Mori. The action takes place suspended on apparatus above the extended Pavilion Theatre stage.

Closing the festival is Metta Theatre’s Blown Away, particularly aimed at young circus-lovers age 3 and above, which invites the audience on a magical theatrical journey through puppetry and live music.

Head of Culture, Adur & Worthing Councils, Amanda O’Reilly, says:

“Summer of Circus is three months of the most spectacular and extraordinary international and UK contemporary circus, right here in Adur and Worthing. We have created a new home for circus on the South Coast and are proud that the festival contains beautiful shows to introduce everyone to this exhilarating new collection of works.”

Nightrider - Unlimited Evening Bus Travel Launch Event

Stagecoach launched its nightrider ticket to celebrate the increased frequency of its evening services on the Coastliner and Pulse routes in Worthing. The nightrider ticket costs just £2 and can be used after 7pm throughout the evening in Worthing and across the South Coast. This is excellent news for the local economy and customers alike, who can enjoy reliable travel at a great price, leaving them more money to spend on a night out in Worthing.

The official launch of Stagecoach South’s nightrider took place on 1 June on the prom, outside the Pavilion Theatre, where Gordon Frost, Operations Director, met The Mayor of Worthing. At the launch, the Mayor of Worthing, Cllr Sean McDonald, said: “I live in Durrington and have been using the Pulse to come into town for many years. Nightrider is fantastic news for Worthing residents and the night time economy, I fully support it.”

Stagecoach also announced that it had frozen fares at 2015 prices and, for the benefit of commuters, has scrapped peak return fares. This means it is now even cheaper to travel to work. Stagecoach hopes that these incentives will encourage people to leave the car at home. Recent national research revealed that commuters can already save an average of £90 a month by using the bus to travel to work and play!

It is also much easier to plan your journey now because the new website, www.stagecoachbus.com, can tell you when the next bus is leaving from your chosen bus stop and gives you the fare for your journey.

Sharon Clarke, Worthing Town Centre Initiative said: “ It is great to hear about the enhancements to the evening bus service in Worthing as this will help to encourage people into the Town Centre for a night out. The news is really positive for the Town’s evening economy.”

Mark Turner, Commercial Director for Stagecoach South said: “These improvements are extremely exciting and if they prove popular, we will be extending the benefits to other Worthing bus routes.“
