On Tuesday 21st June 2016, at around 12 noon, over 200 war veterans from all over London, including Chelsea Pensioners - will be arriving at Worthing Pavilion Theatre for their annual trip to the town.

They will be arriving in style, in the time honoured tradition of being ferried into Worthing by 100  London black taxi drivers, all of whom have given their time for free, to transport these heroic passengers.

This annual event, which has run every year since 1948, is organised by The London Taxi Benevolent Association for War Disabled.  They will be welcomed by the new Mayor and the Mayoress of the Borough of Worthing.

Councillor Sean McDonald, newly elected Mayor of Worthing Council adds “It is a time honoured tradition for the residents of Worthing to welcome these brave men and women every year to our town.  We are delighted that they enjoy Worthing so much, that they continue to visit us every year - this being their 68th visit!  Such was its success last year, we have again organised access for the taxis travelcade to drive straight through the town along Chapel Street.  It will certainly prove to be an impressive sight and I hope that all the veterans and their taxi drivers have an amazing day."

It will be a huge privilege and honour to meet and welcome these veterans and the London Taxi Benevolent Association for War Disabled to Worthing. Both the Mayoress and I are very much looking forward to joining them at the Pavilion Theatre on Tuesday 21st June and to hear their stories.  Hopefully the weather will be kind on the day to allow the veterans to fully enjoy their time on Worthing's promenade.”

The taxis have been granted special permission to drive down Chapel Road, and then make their way to the Pavilion Theatre, at the foot of Worthing’s historic pier.  Here they will enjoy a lunch of fish & chips, entertainment and ice cream from a traditional ice cream van.

The 100 London black taxis will be parked along the promenade, outside the Pavilion Theatre during the days events.

This annual Worthing trip began back in 1948, just after the end of the Second World War.  A  few black cab drivers came together to form The London Taxi Association for War Disabled and together collected money to take the war veterans and Chelsea Pensioners on a trip to the seaside.

Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce enjoy exclusive behind-the-scenes tour at Shoreham Port
Worthing & Adur Chamber of Commerce actively represents the business community on a local, regional and strategic level. They are a vibrant and fast growing chamber encouraging businesses to work together for mutual success. The Chamber champions local industry to secure future investment and growth in our towns.

As part of the Chamber’s busy summer schedule of events Shoreham Port were delighted to offer members a complimentary presentation and boat tour yesterday evening. After an insightful presentation from Sara Bassett, Finance Director and Deputy Chief Executive at Shoreham Port, the group boarded touring boat ‘Rossann’ for a trip down the canal.

Tim Hague, property Manager at Shoreham Port took to the microphone and delivered running commentary throughout the tour.

One Chamber member commented “I really enjoyed the whole evening from upstairs in Nautilus House with the food and talk until sailing off and listening to Tim telling us, so professionally, about everything we saw. It was very interesting.”

Damian Pulford from Sussex Transport added “The Port has always been a bit of a local enigma, so it’s nice to fully comprehend what they do and how it all works. This type of business “open day” works well for me!”

Tina Tilley, CEO Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce commented “Thank you is a poor statement for what must be one of the best events we have held for the Chamber of Commerce.

The welcome and standard of the event set the port tour up wonderfully for what was the highlight of the boat tour. This was an eye opener to all who attended to see the amount of commercial importance the port has to our area.”

Sara Bassett added “Thank you to all who attended our presentation and boat tour yesterday. We had a fantastic evening and thoroughly enjoyed showing members of the Chamber around the Port and answering any questions they had. We are proud to be members of the Worthing & Adur Chamber of Commerce and look forward to meeting new and existing members at future events.”

Over 50 members of the local business community joined Worthing and Adur Chamber, Tim Loughton and Sir Peter Bottomley last week at Worthing Golf Club to debate being in or Out of the EU.

Several questions were taken from the floor with Tim Loughton and Sir Peter Bottomley both given opportunities to respond. Many focused around business and export with Peter emphasising that being part of Europe makes transporting goods and employing skilled and unskilled workers much easier with EU border controls. Tim Loughton expressed that coming out of Europe would allow the UK to do trade deals independently with the rest of the world not just through the EU and still allow the UK to employ those staff that are needed.

Large companies are still choosing to remain in the UK including GSK who are expanding locally.  Tim Loughton has spoken to large companies in a forum who have stated that if UK should leave the EU they will adapt and will be able to deal with the change. Sir Peter Bottomley pointed out that major manufacturers like Nissan review where they do business every 5 years and the UK could be less beneficial if it left the EU.

Both commented that each European country interpret the EU laws independently. The UK, it could be said, interpret these laws at the ‘Good Civil Servant’ end of the spectrum, some other European countries have a more relaxed approach.

Both also agreed that the EU needs reform and more than a few token measures, maybe this referendum will shock the EU into becoming more viable for the future. Could we have got a better deal if more time was taken before the referendum time limit at the end of 2017?  Quite probably.

A quick straw poll from the room was fairly split. What remains is more facts are needed in order to make an informed vote. As voters not only do we have to decide what is best for the country but maybe more importantly what is best for us personally and for our families in the future.  The decision is firmly yours- as long as you vote!

At last... a chance to become more successful and profitable for FREE!

Imagine how much more successful your business would be if 20 of the region’s leading entrepreneurs gave up their time freely to help you to drive it forward.

Imagine how much easier and quicker it would be to solve problems and capitalise on opportunities if you could tap into the experience and expertise of other business

leaders and professionals across the UK.

And imagine how much more profitable yourbusiness would be if you were supported in all of this by some of the world’s leading business thinkers and writers.

Well, now at last you can do all of this and much, much more.

    Let me explain...

We are launching a completely new type of executive forum for business leaders like

you. Called the Business Success Forum (‘BSF’) it makes it possible for you to:

    • Meet and network with many of the region’s most successful entrepreneurs
    • Learn their success secrets – and use them to make your business more
    • successful
    • Discover practical solutions to business problems
    • Build up an encyclopaedia of practical business growth tools and resources, and
    • Create an action plan for building your business profitably
    • The BSF is a self-help group for forward thinking business leaders.

So, rather than bringing in expensive outside business gurus, the BSF makes the most of the best consultants in the world for your business.... YOU, and other business leaders just like you.

People like you and me who really understand what business is about. People like you and me who have faced and overcome every challenge in the book. People like you and me who get results and make things happen.

And, most importantly, people who are willing to get together for two hours every month to share ideas and insights to help each other become even more successful.

(Don’t worry, though, you’ll never have to do anything uncomfortable like making a speech – since that’s not how the forum works).

Facilitated by our team, who use their experience and insights to kick-start

proceedings, each BSF workshop will address the issues that you tell us are most important to the success of your business.

It all starts at 5:30pm on Tuesday 28th June 2016 at the Sphere Business Centre – and will finish by 7.00pm

Tickets for individual Business Success Forums are usually £27 plus VAT.

But for all business users of the Sphere, members of the Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce and clients of Bespoke Accounting they are completely FREE.

I am so convinced that you will find the launch meeting a hugely valuable and enjoyable use of your time that I will also provide FREE guest places for a senior colleague or business associate to come with you.

So if you would like to confirm those places, please contact Jarrad Gilbertson on 08008 620 950 or by email at jarrad@bespoke.accountants.
