New commercial food waste service launches

Businesses across Adur and Worthing can now turn their leftovers into something great thanks to the Councils’ new commercial food waste collection service.

As part of its ongoing sustainability drive, Adur & Worthing Councils have worked with dozens of local organisations to develop a resourceful way to recycle rubbish.

A new dedicated collection service keeps food separate from other waste. The leftovers are then treated sustainably and used to generate energy.

With up to 33% of waste collected from local businesses being food, the new service is already helping divert hundreds of kilos of kitchen leftovers and plate waste away from landfill.

This is good for the environment but also cheaper for the companies and the Councils in the long run.

Cllr Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “For more than 30 years, we have been providing collections of general and recyclable waste to thousands of local businesses.

“Now, we’re taking our professional and proactive approach to food waste - providing a dedicated weekly service so that businesses, schools and other organisations can play a part in protecting the environment.”

Cllr Edward Crouch, Worthing Borough Council’s Executive Member for Digital & Environmental Services, said: “This is an exciting new service which really highlights the commitment to the environment that many of our local businesses want to take.

“We’ve worked really hard with new and existing customers to create a service which is not only easy-to-use but also one that does not cost the earth either. Feedback so far has been great and I look forward to it developing further in the coming months.”

A trial commercial food waste service began in the autumn and nearly 20 businesses and organisations have already signed up to weekly collections.

The Councils’ dedicated commercial waste team works with customers to create a waste collection service that works for them.

Dedicated red-lidded bins are then provided for all food waste which are then emptied regularly by expert crews in a new specially branded vehicle.

Clients will receive a new 'Food Waste Recycler' window sticker and other branding materials which they can display to show their customers that they are committed to managing their waste effectively

Among those to have already signed up to the service are Finch Bar & Eatery in Warwick Street, Worthing.

In the first two months, nearly 190 kilos of food has been recycled into energy. This reduction in general waste means they will soon be able to reduce the number of bins it has, saving £450 a year in collection and disposal costs.

Megan Dooley, owner of Finch, said: “We have decided to use the Councils’ food waste service in an effort to be more environmentally-conscious, to send less waste to landfill and to reduce our carbon footprint.

“It’s been really easy to set up. It’s been tailored to our needs and is a very affordable service. I have really enjoyed using it and I think it’s really beneficial for businesses.

“I would decide to use the Councils as a food waste provider because it is simple to use, they are really reliable, they have been easy to contact and get in touch with and are a trusted food waste provider.”

For more information on the Councils Commercial Food Waste service visit: www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/commercial-waste/food-waste/

Councils begin winter tree planting project

A winter tree planting project has started across Adur and Worthing which will eventually see more than 150 planted in the area.

Funded by The Tree Council, Adur District Councils’ Parks Team have put in place eight different ‘native’ saplings made up of four English Oaks, a Small Leaved Lime, a Hornbeam, a Sycamore and an Elm which is resistant to Dutch Elm Disease.

The next phase at Park Avenue Open Space, in Shoreham, which is funded by the Brighton Permaculture Trust as part of their “Growing Community Orchards” programme, will be undertaken by volunteers and assisted by the Permaculture Trust where 10 Apple trees will be planted.

As part of Adur & Worthing Councils’  budget, there are also plans to plant a mixture of street trees such as English Oak, Willow leaved Pear, Sweet Gum, Birch, Norway Maple, Broad Leaved Cockspur and Scarlet Hawthorn at sites in Tower Road, North Road, Grosvenor Avenue, Hamble Road, Sompting Road and Sompting Recreation Ground.

The remaining trees to be planted in the parks and open spaces are standard trees around 2.5 to 3.5 metres which will be planted through the winter and completed by March.

Cllr Emma Evans, Adur District Council's Executive Member for the Environment, said: “Projects like this to plant trees is something we regularly do here as we try to reduce our carbon footprint. But as well as playing a vital role benefiting the environment, trees are also hugely beneficial for enhancing the character of an area, as well as boosting wildlife.”

Cllr Edward Crouch, Worthing Borough Council's Executive Member for Digital and Environmental Services, added: We're really excited about this project as we know that it will make a real difference to communities across the region.

“Trees are a precious natural asset and are a vital part of the fight against climate change. Trees also create habitats for wildlife, improve biodiversity, and aid wildlife corridors, as well as being hugely beneficial for our wellbeing.”

Trees will be planted at a host of sites around the area including Buckingham Park, Southwick Green, Parklands, Malthouse Meadow and Lancing Manor in Adur and Longcroft Park, Highdown North Field, Beach House Park and Hillbarn Recreation Ground, in Worthing.

There are also a number of small Ash trees, commonly called whips, that will be delivered under the normal winter planting programme, which will also be funded by the Councils. These will replace the ones felled as part of the Ash tree dieback project.

This is just one part of the Councils’ wider SustainableAW programme, which outlines the commitment to tackle climate change and protect our natural environment.

The Councils are responsible for more than 18,000 including landmark ones such as the Ilex Way in Goring, the spooky Midsummer Tree in Broadwater and 200-year-old sweet chestnuts in Buckingham Park.

The Tree Council, which was established in 1973, is a charity that aims to bring governments, communities and individuals together to care for trees and improve the planet's future environment at both national and local level.

Growing Community Orchards is a government initiative that promotes and encourages neighbourhoods to gain access to green spaces and make use of land such as parks, allotments and nature reserves to plant trees and wildflowers.

Have your say on the future of our beaches

Residents in Adur and Worthing are being given the chance to question Southern Water about bathing water quality results, as well as the company’s plans for future services.

Joint chairs of Adur & Worthing Councils' Joint Overview and Scrutiny Committee (JOSC) want to hear from the public ahead of a meeting next Thursday (January 27) where representatives from Southern Water will be present to take submitted questions from residents, via the Chairman, during 30 minutes of public question time.

JOSC is the committee of councillors established to question and scrutinise decisions made by the Councils' Leaders, or Executive Members, of the Councils. It has no jurisdiction over planning or licensing decisions but regularly invites other public bodies, including the Environment Agency.

Southern Water has accepted an invitation to deliver a presentation about how it provides services and its plans for improved infrastructure, while meeting the needs of residents, especially in new developments where demand is set to increase.

Joint JOSC chair and representative for Adur District Council, Cllr Joss Loader, said: “The Council would love to hear from residents who have very understandable concerns about bathing water quality and what’s being done to help prevent the discharge of sewage into the River Adur and sea, after periods of heavy rain.

“We want to work with Southern Water to ensure everyone can enjoy our beautiful coastline and are able to swim in clean seas. That work has been on-going and will continue in earnest, but we would like to hear from anyone who has any concerns and questions.”

Fellow joint JOSC chair and representative for Worthing Borough Council, Charles James, added: “We are very lucky to live on the coast and have access to the sea and the Councils are therefore totally committed to ensuring the very highest standard of water quality. So, if you have any questions, or recommendations then please submit them via email (address below).”

Southern Water was fined a record £90m last July after the company admitted 6,971 illegal spills from 17 sites in Hampshire, Kent and West Sussex between 2010 and 2015.

A report from the company suggested that the target to achieve ‘excellent’ bathing water quality standard would be 2021/22 based on data over a four-year period with the results due to be released ahead of the meeting.

The Councils have also been working with various partners such as the Public Health & Regulation (PH&R), Coastal Office and Building Control Teams in conjunction with Southern Water and the Environment Agency in a bid to improve the quality of bathing water to obtain and then maintain ‘Blue Flag’ status along its coast.

As a result of those meetings, there has been training for Council Officers to help identify any faults in new developments, as well as additional signage along Worthing promenade to highlight the dog exclusion zone that operates between May and September.

The Councils also worked with Southern Water and other authorities on the Beauty of the Beach campaign. This aims to educate the public about what they can do to improve bathing water quality, while also providing relevant statistics on water quality.

All questions must be submitted via email to democratic.services@adur-worthing.gov.uk and must be in by Tuesday, January 25 at midday.
