Join thousands of UK businesses tackling climate change

A business opportunity like no other

Businesses of all sizes around the UK are committing to do their bit to cut carbon emissions and protect the planet.

The UK government has partnered with business owners and respected climate groups to help you join them today.

How could your business make a difference?
No matter how small your business or what industry you’re in, your commitment could make a real difference – to the planet, to your customers and to your running costs! Even the smallest businesses produce carbon emissions – it could be through your building, your vehicles or your supply chain. We’re asking you to take the first step on your journey, by committing to cutting those carbon emissions in half by 2030 and to reach ‘net zero’ by 2050. Net zero means that you are putting no more carbon into the atmosphere than you are taking out of it.

What happens when you make the commitment?

When you take the first step by making a commitment, we’ll get in touch with tools to help you understand your emissions, how to tackle them, and how to share what you’re doing with your customers and community. And in the following months we’ll keep you up to date with ideas, support and incentives to help you meet your commitment.

Join thousands of businesses and commit today!

2021 is the time. This November the UK government is hosting a major conference in Glasgow where world leaders will get together to commit to urgent action to tackle the climate emergency. It’s called COP26, and all eyes will be on the UK to agree the most ambitious plans to fight climate change the world has ever seen.

And you can be part of it. Become one of thousands of small business climate leaders across the UK this year and commit today.

Fire Safety team prepare to welcome businesses at Worthing event

Landlords, business managers and care providers are being invited to a specialist fire safety event next month to help ensure they’re compliant with legislation.

The two-day event, running from 9 – 10 November, will be held in the marquee at Steyne Gardens in Worthing.

The service’s Fire Safety Protection team will be joined by key partners to deliver four sessions on fire safety in care homes and specialised housing, businesses, as well as in flats and high-rise buildings.

Information on the four sessions can be found below:

The sessions are free to attend and can be booked via Eventbrite.

Businesses are also encouraged to come along to Steyne Gardens between 10am and 3pm on either day to meet the team, get advice on fire safety legislation and find out about our specialist fire safety training courses.

Crews from Worthing Fire Station and members of our Prevention team will also be on-hand to give wider safety advice – such as information on fire safety in the home and how to keep safe on the roads.

Area Manager for Protection, Garry Collins, said: “We’re really looking forward to meeting local business owners and helping to resolve any fire safety concerns they may have, in order to create a safer environment for everyone involved in business management and public safety.

“Fire safety in the workplace is a legal requirement for all employers, as they are liable for the safety of staff and site visitors. Therefore, we will be on hand to help with tasks, such as completing fire risks assessments, to ensure they’re fully understood by everyone responsible.

“Last year West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service attended 29 industrial building fires, and with more businesses returning to the workplace, ensuring premises are safe has never been more important. So please, pop along, meet the team and find out more.”

Worthing entrepreneurs crowned small business champions

Watch This Sp_ce, an innovative diversity and inclusion consultancy based in Worthing, has won the hotly contested Business Boost competition.

Almost 25,000 small businesses entered the competition to win £25,000, orchestrated by Simply Business, and the judges, including Dragons’ Den’s Piers Linney, The Apprentice’s Carina Lepore, and author Tony Robinson OBE, were unanimous in their decision to award the prize to entrepreneurs Mo Kanjilal and Allegra Chapman, who work from Worthing co-working spaces Freedom Works and Rooms.

Simply Business provides insurance to more than 800,000 businesses across the UK, and they know that the self-employed have been hit hardest by Covid-19. With the pandemic costing small business owners an average of £22,461, many are facing desperate circumstances. But small businesses are vital to the UK landscape, accounting for 99% of all British businesses and contributing £2 trillion to the economy. That’s why Simply Business wanted to provide £25,000 to help a worthy business succeed in these challenging times.

Watch This Sp_ce was born from the pandemic. As the world was forced to rethink the way it does business, Mo Kanjilal, Allegra Chapman and their fellow Co-Creator, Rachel Pearson, knew that a fundamental reimagination of the world of work was needed – and had been needed for some time. Having been running the networking group Brighton Digital Women since 2015, the team had heard many stories of workplace discrimination, harassment and burnout from their members. They had also experienced toxic and demeaning work environments themselves.

Yet they knew that this approach to work culture was counter-productive. “We heard time and again that there was no room in business for pandering to ‘woke’ agendas,” Allegra Chapman recalls, “but all the research shows that organisations that make space for diversity and inclusion are more innovative, more productive, more successful and more profitable. It’s not about being nice or politically correct – it’s good business sense.”

So, despite the challenges of multiple lockdowns, they set out to educate business owners about the value of inclusion, and launched their Inclusion Audit to allow organisations to create roadmaps for change. They began providing training courses for their clients, but the media message was against them.

“There has been so much talk recently about how diversity and inclusion training doesn’t work,” Mo Kanjilal says. “And, on the whole, it doesn’t. You can’t fix deep rooted unconscious biases and become a diverse and inclusive organisation in a one-hour workshop, that’s impossible. To truly make change that will benefit your organisation, you need to commit to a long-term journey of growth and development. This is an approach that needs to be embedded in the fabric of your organisation, and that takes commitment.”

Now that the Watch This Sp_ce team are in receipt of the Business Boost award, they will be building a subscription platform that will enable organisations to access a whole suite of training courses to support their diversity and inclusion journey. These courses will support everything from inclusive recruitment practices to inclusive communication and marketing methods. Organisations will learn how to increase innovation and to protect their business from potential crises in the future.

It hasn’t been an easy 18 months for the Watch This Sp_ce team. Starting a business in a pandemic meant that they weren’t able to meet many of their initial clients in person. Their events all had to be online, and they were launching a new product at a time of economic uncertainty. They also faced a number of personal challenges. Rachel Pearson was hospitalised with Covid-19 in January 2021, and gave birth to her first child in August 2021. Allegra Chapman gave birth to her second child in January 2021, who arrived five weeks premature and with a kidney condition. Thankfully, both mothers and babies are doing well now!

After all the struggles they have faced in the early days of the business, winning the Business Boost competition is a very welcome change of fortune. “This is going to change everything for us,” Allegra Chapman said. “This money takes us from the initial start-up stage, armed with only our ideas, passion and optimism, to running a viable business overnight.”

“It’s incredibly exciting,” Mo Kanjilal agreed. “Getting a start-up off the ground is incredibly challenging, and we’ve been doing it all on our own around our day jobs and our families. Now we can concentrate fully on Watch This Sp_ce and on making it everything that we know it can be.”

Watch This Sp_ce already has a number of fans across Sussex, with organisations they have worked with describing them as “powerful”, “engaging”, “insightful”, “a pleasure to work with” and “simply fantastic”. Now the team are set to introduce the rest of the UK to their energetic and inspiring approach to business.

Greater Brighton City Region can lead the UK fight against climate change

Greater Brighton can be a flagship city region leading the fight against climate change but needs more government support to unlock powers to take action.

That was the message from Greater Brighton’s spokesman on the environment as he closed a special conference on transitioning to a net zero carbon economy which attracted speakers from around the world.

Cllr Phelim MacCafferty, who is also Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, told the conference, ‘I really hope that the PM and the UK governments accelerate the pace and scale of change that is so urgently needed.

‘We need political leaders working together at national and international levels to give our planet and our ecosystem a fighting chance.’

He added that time was not on the side for the battle nor were resources plentiful.

‘Hence, we need to pool our capacity as a region, put our political differences to one aside and pull together to solve this climate crisis for the benefit of all our communities now and for future generations,’ he said.

The Greater Brighton conference attracted an online audience of more than 200 including climate change experts, government officials, local environment groups and members of the public.

They were told that, without action on carbon emissions, temperatures were likely to continue to rise in the Greater Brighton area and winter rainfall would increase on average by 25 per cent with a corresponding decline in summer with dramatic effects on the environment..

Figures show that the people in the region averaged around 8,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide emission per person per year. This needed to drop drastically to around 3,000 to counter the effects of climate change.

But the conference heard that actions were already being taken that could make a difference. Among the initiatives outlined were:

    • Plans to create a Sussex Bay marine park restoring the kelp forest off the coast which captures carbon up to 100 times more effectively than trees
    • Plans were developing to create a green hydrogen fuel hub at Shoreham Port using wind and wave power and cutting-edge technological work was underway at engineering company Ricardo creating carbon-free engines for the future
    • Work ongoing to transform Brighton & Hove bus fleet from diesel to clean electric and hydrogen fuel. A similar initiative is taking place with Metrobus in Crawley.
    • Groundbreaking co-operation between the Universities of Brighton and Sussex to create an Innovation Centre for climate change technologies
    • Work underway to create a Greater Brighton investment platform to attract support for new technologies, creating new jobs and opportunities.

The conference heard from Andrea Durbin, Director of Planning and Sustainability at the City of Portland, Oregon on the US west coast which in the last two years has suffered record numbers of wildfires and soaring temperatures which killed 60 people.

‘The time is now, we need to act now, the next few years really matter. Be bold, be quick, don't hesitate and make a full commitment but do it in a way that really centres people,' she said.

The Greater Brighton city region covers an area from Selsey in the west to Newhaven in the east and as far north as Crawley. By working collaboratively it has brought significant investment into the region and is now positioning itself as a key leader in clean, sustainable growth.

A full recording of the conference can be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iqfh364wtk

Howe wins unanimous backing for post of new Chief Executive of Adur & Worthing Councils

Dr Catherine Howe has been recommended for the post of Chief Executive of Adur & Worthing Councils after a rigorous recruitment process.

The current interim Chief Executive was the unanimous choice of the Joint Senior Staff Committee, consisting of ruling and opposition councillors including the Leaders of both Adur District Council and Worthing Borough Council.

The committee’s recommendation will now go before the Full Council meetings of both district and borough in the next two weeks for approval.

Dr Howe joined the Councils in Spring last year as Director for Communities. In the summer she became Interim Chief Executive after the retirement of Alex Bailey who had led the Councils’ paid service for eight years.

Dr Howe has considerable experience in social innovation and digital transformation and during her short time in Communities changed the department’s focus to develop data-led, targeted approaches to the delivery of service to residents.

Previously she held senior management roles with Cancer Research UK, Capita, Public-i and the London Business School.

She has built a reputation for leadership across technological, social and innovation work and a strong interest in democracy and place.

Dr Howe will lead a shared Adur & Worthing Councils service of more than 750 staff working under the democratically separate entities of district and borough.

Councils are responsible for, among others, housing, health and wellbeing, waste services, major economic projects, environmental health, digital services and open spaces.
