New initiative offers employment boost for young people

A new centre where young people can get help with training, apprenticeships and employment has opened for business in Worthing.

The One Stop Youth Employment Hub in Marine Place in Worthing, which is run as a partnership between the Department for Work & Pensions, local community group The Sid Youth and Adur & Worthing Council, provides support to young people whose employment prospects have been impacted by the COVID pandemic.

Many young people in Adur and Worthing have lost their jobs or training opportunities as a result of the COVID pandemic, while others have struggled to secure employment since leaving education.

As the fallout from the pandemic continues and the furlough scheme comes to an end later this year, it is anticipated that there will be further job losses and redundancies, with young people, in particular, being affected.

At present, more than 1,100  people under the age of 25 are currently claiming unemployment related benefits in Adur and Worthing.

To support young people back into work, they will be able to get one-to-one support from a careers coach and help with CV writing, interview preparation and communication skills. Health practitioners will also be on-hand to provide support with mental or physical health issues that may be getting in the way of young people finding work or training opportunities.

The initiative is supported by several training providers and local businesses and organisations, including GBMET, Albion in the Community and Worthing’s new creative space, Audio Active.

Cllr Brian Boggis, Adur District Council's Executive Member for Regeneration, said:

“Young people at the start of their careers are among the worst hit by the impact of COVID and we’re now seeing high unemployment rates in this age group.

“Through the One Stop Youth Employment Hub, we aim to give young people the best possible chance of finding work in these uncertain times by connecting them with local employers and training providers.”

Cllr Kevin Jenkins, Worthing Borough Council's Executive Member for Regeneration, said:

“We know that many young people have been struggling with their mental health as a result of the pandemic and are concerned about their loss of education or prospects for finding work.

“By having a physical premises in the town centre for young people to meet with careers coaches and access wider support services, we can provide more tailored and holistic support, including addressing the physical and mental health needs of individuals to help them find work.”

The One Stop Youth Employment Hub is part of a wider package to support young people to find employment in Adur and Worthing. Earlier this year, the Councils secured work placements for several 16-24-year-olds under the Kickstart scheme. This Government-funded project provides young people who are on Universal Credit or deemed to be at risk of long-term unemployment with six-month work placements.

Project fabric to bring business and community together in Lancing

A deal has been signed to turn a former police station into a hive of community activity and support with the emphasis on job creation.

Adur District Council has taken a pioneering approach to community rebuilding post pandemic by signing a deal with cutting edge coworking and flexible office company Freedom Works to transform the former Lancing Police Station.

The programme, called Fabric, aims to offer community, charity and small business space in the North Road premises both to create sustainable jobs in Lancing but also to encourage the new tenants to work together on ideas that can bring new opportunity to the village.

The Council purchased the building last year.

Freedom Works, which already has creative spaces and flexible collaborative workspace in Worthing and Hove among others, will now begin the search for tenants who can demonstrate they are enterprises that provide social value, the community can tangibly benefit, and have a commitment to Lancing.

An agency called The Ideas Alliance will work on an initial project to ensure that the building is fully integrated into the community of Lancing, embracing residents and organisations to develop best ways the new Fabric building can serve the community and create employment.

Adur District Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Angus Dunn, said, ‘We have taken an innovative approach to community coherence and opportunity with this Fabric project.

‘By working with partners and more importantly the residents of Lancing we want Fabric to be seen as a beacon of excellence in community building and collaboration to enhance the prospects of local people.’

Executive member for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Kevin Boram, added, ‘‘Through the pandemic we have learnt how important our local communities are for our well-being.  This project is a great opportunity to invest in Lancing to create jobs and bounce back better.’

New and emerging businesses are likely to be the target for Fabric as well as charities and community groups, who can take advantage of up-to-date low-cost working facilities to grow their business but also have the creativity to contribute ideas collaboratively for the benefit of Lancing. Community events will also be hosted there.

Freedom Works Managing Director, Jon Trigg, said, ‘We are delighted to sign this deal to transform the old police station. Work starts now both to make it fit for the local community to work from and to ensure we get the right mix of businesses and organisation in it. We want it to be buzzing with activity and also be very, very welcoming to local residents.’

It is hoped Fabric Lancing will be open for business and ideas in late October. Fabric will roll out across the Adur & Worthing Councils area with another scheme set to open across the council border later this year.

Any enterprise interested in taking space in Fabric Lancing can contact Freedom Works on 01903 681100 or via their website at https://www.freedomworks.space/locations/lancing-fabric/

Tributes pour in honouring the life of Cllr David Simmons

Cllr David Simmons - one of Adur’s most popular and well-respected councillors who “had time for everyone and helped countless people” -  has sadly died.

David represented Cokeham Ward from 2006 to 2014 and Hillside Ward,  in Southwick,  from 2014 until the time of his death and was Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing until 2020. He passed away peacefully last Friday.

Prior to retirement at the rank of Inspector, David had a successful 30-year-career with Sussex Police. He was also the serving Chair of the Sir Robert Woodard Academy’s governing body, and a former West Sussex County Councillor, representing Southwick, until May this year.

He leaves a widow, Pauline,  plus a son, Damon and two daughters, Paula and Hanna, with his late wife, Tina, and 14 grandchildren.

David was renowned throughout Adur and West Sussex as a man with an unrivalled work ethic, strong sense of community and a phenomenal desire to help people and champion the underdog.

During his time as both a senior Police Officer and subsequent election as a councillor in 2006, he fought tirelessly to help  local people, particularly the young and those with special educational needs. He also strived to improve community race relations and to divert young people away from lives of crime.

Following his death, friends and colleagues gave thanks for the huge contribution he made to  local communities and highlighted his lasting legacy.

East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton said:

“Dave was one of the hardest working and most dedicated councillors I have ever had the pleasure to work with and I am immensely grateful for all the kindness he showed me. He gave so much to his community, in so many ways, and will be greatly missed by many constituents.

“Whether it was his involvement with the schools he served as Governor such as the Sir Robert Woodard Academy, his distinguished career in the police service, his work on protecting vulnerable children and families both at County Hall and at Adur, his support for his church and particularly through the choir, or his skill and compassion in just solving problems for local people as a local councillor,  Dave always threw himself into everything he did with great gusto and success.

“He could always be relied on to take up problems and casework and see them through and he was highly effective in the many years of public service that he generously gave and which touched so many people’s lives for the better. He will be very, very hard to replace and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, of whom I am proud and fortunate to have been one of many.”

Cllr Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council added:

“It is with great sadness that I learned of Dave’s death last week. He was a true gentleman and worked tirelessly and with phenomenal energy to make our communities a better place.

“He was committed to giving everyone a voice and had time for everybody, despite his incredibly busy schedule.  I have never met anybody with more commitment, passion and a very sincere desire to help. He touched countless lives across this county, in an incredibly positive way, and leaves a lasting and enduring legacy.”

Chairman of ADC, Cllr Stephen Chipp, was also deeply saddened.  He said:

“Dave was the first Executive Member  I interviewed in my role as new member of the Scrutiny Committee back in 2014.  I actually apologised for submitting so many questions in my first meeting and he told me that he was delighted to have been asked so many relevant questions relating to his portfolio.

“ I found Dave to be a true gentleman, dedicated to his role as a Councillor and also great company just for a social chat.  He will be sorely missed by all of us at the Council and I would like to extend my own sincerest condolences to his loved ones. ”

Principal at Sir Robert Woodard Academy, Kieran Scanlon, highlighted the major role that David played in the Lancing school’s success.

He said: "Dave joined the Academy in 2013 as a Councillor, he took over as Chair in 2015 and I can honestly say he played a huge part in helping to build  the momentum that the Academy enjoys today.

"He has supported me personally in good times and bad, he was a great listening ear and a critical friend when he needed to be. More than anything he had great faith in the staff and pupils of the Sir Robert Woodard Academy  and he will be sorely missed. "

Close family friend, The Rev’d Pat Alden, emphasised Dave’s  contribution to St Nicolas Church in Shoreham.

“Dave was a member of St Nicolas Church for many years, sang in the choir and was the principal soloist at all important times.

He also sang with several choirs including the Shoreham Chamber choir.  He had enjoyed singing from a very early age and his voice will be sorely missed. Thank you Dave for all the contributions you made to our choir as well as to the worship and life of the Church,  as well as the community you served.

Finally, his close friend Cllr Joss Loader paid tribute to his warmth and humanity.

She said, “Kindness can be a very under-valued attribute but Dave always had time and genuine concern for people, particularly those who felt they lacked a voice and were enduring real problems and hardship.

“His humanity, compassion and sheer kindness always shone through.  I respected him hugely as a councillor, school governor and community worker but above all I valued him as my friend.  Dave was one of a kind - he is simply irreplaceable.”

*The funeral service  will take place in Shoreham on a date to be confirmed. As a mark of respect,  the flag will fly at half mast at the Shoreham Centre on the day.

A minute's silence will be held at October's Full Council meeting, plus the meetings of the Joint Strategic Committee and Joint Overview and Scrutiny Committee this month.

Local homeless charity launches Harvest Appeal to support the growing numbers of people becoming homeless across West Sussex

Turning Tides are urging the whole community to become ‘Harvest Heroes’ by donating money to enable them to buy essential items throughout the autumn and winter months ahead. Harvest Festival is traditionally a time for giving, a time for thanks and for recognising and sharing with others.

For local homeless charity, Turning Tides, it has always been a hugely important time. Last year, thanks to the support of local schools and churches across the county, over £20,000 was raised which helped to feed local people experiencing homelessness throughout the winter. Financial donations given during Harvest meant the charity could buy vital fresh and healthy produce.

Ruth Poyner, Head of Fundraising comments: “Financial donations during Harvest will allow us to buy fresh nutritious produce, helping us plan carefully throughout the year. Prolonged periods of homelessness can lead to malnutrition, anaemia and a host of other serious health issues. Buying fresh with funds kindly given by the community helps us care for the health and immunity of those who come to our Hubs - particularly for those who sleep rough. With your help we can meet the daily nutritional needs of the hundreds we support throughout West Sussex, during such a critical time, when Covid is still very much present in our community.”

As the long term economic reality of Covid really starts to bite in our communities, Turning Tides are seeing a rapidly increasing number of people coming to them for support. Ruth continues: “Many more people across our county are seeking help for the first time as they tackle job loss, bereavement and poor mental health. Another consequence of the pandemic has been increasing food poverty which ranges from being worried about where the next meal is coming from to actually going hungry on a regular basis – something we see far too often at our Community Hubs”.

Claire Halford Dale, Turning Tides’ Worthing Community Hub Manager sees the real impact of food poverty every day when she opens the Hub to people who have been forced to sleep rough: “The majority of people who come to our Hub arrive very hungry, and I don’t just mean the type of hunger where your stomach rumbles – more like the hunger where you feel exhausted, dizzy, nauseous and shake from lack of nutrition. All too often the meal we provide our clients will be the only one they have that day and they have no idea where the next meal is coming from. That is really scary – most of us take this for granted, we have snacks in the cupboard, the next meal bought and planned for. To not know when your basic physical needs might be met every day can make people feel extremely anxious and depressed. Supporting Turning Tides’ Harvest appeal ensures we can provide nutritious food for the growing numbers accessing our services. This generosity can also feed the soul as much as the body – the people we support realise their community cares and that they are not alone.”

Members of the community, faith groups and schools can become a Hero at Harvest by donating to the appeal.

    •        £10 – will fill a bag of wholesome lunchtime snacks for several people having to sleep rough.

    •        £50 – will provide a basket of basics for two people living in our accommodation for a week.

    •        £100 – will pack a trolley with essentials for two people every fortnight

Children across the county can get involved by becoming ‘Heroes Against Homelessness at Harvest’ - a hero themed dress up day at school – each donating just £1. Faith communities could collect throughout Harvest during their services. Donations throughout Harvest will go a long way to supporting the nutrition of the growing numbers needing the charity’s help.

If you would like more information about Harvest or to register to receive Turning Tides’ Heroes at Harvest video sign up here: https://www.turning-tides.org.uk/harvest/ or call on 01903 680740 and speak to a member of the Fundraising Team.

Three new recruits mark Carpenter Box annual trainee programme

Carpenter Box, an award-winning firm of chartered accountants, tax and business advisers in Worthing, has welcomed three new trainees to mark the start of its annual training programme.

Each academic year, Carpenter Box hosts an ongoing stream of recruitment for trainee positions at its offices in Worthing, Gatwick and Brighton, with 21 trainees joining over the previous 12 months. They currently employ a grand total 43 trainees at the firm, making up more than 20% of its overall workforce.

University graduates Alex Paddley and Shaha Choudhury, and undergraduate Farhan Nibrash, joined the firm’s Worthing office on Monday 6 September with no previous experience in the finance industry.

Trainees are recruited into departments such as tax, audit and assurance, and business services, with the potential to rotate depending on demand, while they work to gain qualifications. These qualifications include Chartered Accountant (ACA), Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA) and Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA).

They also have access to apprenticeship schemes which, alongside traditional qualifications, provide opportunities to enhance knowledge, skills and behaviour such as problem solving and communication.

James Gawman, Training Director at Carpenter Box, said, “Over the course of the training programme, recruits are granted study leave and have bi-annual meetings with a senior partner and me to discuss progress and exam planning.

“Those taking part in apprenticeship schemes are also involved in soft skill workshop days and partner with coaches from our chosen training provider, who act as mentors throughout their development.

“We want to feel part of all our trainees’ journey. When results day comes, there’s no better feeling than seeing someone’s hard work and commitment pay off and being a part of that celebration.”

Carpenter Box prides itself on a culture which leads to high levels of employee retention and long-term progression opportunities. James recently joined the firm’s managing partner Alan Edwards in celebrating over 25 years at the firm after both started out as trainees in the 1990s.

James added “I have been able to fulfil numerous ambitions with Carpenter Box and look at the firm as one big family who are there to support your goals and provide exciting opportunities into your future. It really is one of the best out there.”
