Worthing Homes and Turning Tides work together to support the homeless

Worthing Homes and Placemakers are working jointly with West Sussex County Council and Turning Tides in developing Skywaves and Clifton Road.

SkyWaves will be 21 self-contained flats for single people with high support needs. They  have been co-designed with a homeless client group  The flats will be staffed 24hrs day / 7 days week, helping rough sleepers and homeless  people on their initial steps towards living fully independently. The site was previously  occupied by Feba Radio, hence the SkyWaves name.

Clients are expected to stay 6-9 months before taking the next step into alternative Turning  Tides accommodation. This will include 13 new self-contained flats for people with lower  support needs at Clifton Road in the town.

In terms of a journey out of homelessness, SkyWaves is the start of the local support service  and Clifton Road the end point.

Known for its beaches and seaside atmosphere, the south coast town of Worthing has a hidden side. Each night 200 people are homeless, and typically 85-90% have a local connection. Some are sofa surfing, some street homeless but all are vulnerable due to a lack of housing and support.

After years of planning and preparation, SkyWaves is finally being built. This will create homes and support for homeless people, starting a journey out of homelessness.

My favourite thing about being a member is having regular meet ups with business friends, learning something new and having fun, which when working on your own A gets me out of the house and B keeps me connected and allows me to learn from others. The sense of belonging the Chamber fosters is invaluable to me. Through regular meetups, I not only expand my professional network but I can also sound off to fellow business owners who understand the unique challenges and triumphs of being on the business journey. These connections go beyond business; they provide a supportive community that energises and motivates me. Better Roads in Sussex - an update from WSCC

Welcome to a special edition of our residents’ newsletter in which we focus on the challenges we’re currently facing with the condition of our roads, what we’re doing to repair them, where you can find more information and how you can help us.

What’s going on with our roads?

We understand how frustrated people feel about the exceptional number of defects currently present on some roads in West Sussex and the impact this has on travelling around the county.

We feel that frustration too and are working hard to make improvements using the resources available to us.

Like many other local councils across the UK, we have deteriorating roads due to a combination of factors:

    • extreme fluctuations in weather, especially the wet spells earlier this year
    • volume and weight of vehicles using the network
    • not enough funding available to carry out all the repair works that need doing.

But we are facing the challenge head-on and pumping a multi-million pound package into a series of road repairs and improvements, to provide a road network we can all be proud of.

We’d like to thank our teams, suppliers and contractors, who are all working flat out to resolve the issues.

Read more on the link below about our challenge and the work our Highways teams are completing across our 4,000kms of roads.

    George Square Financial Management Commentary

The election is on, but markets have barely noticed

The UK general election may matter a great deal to voters but to the markets it has had very little impact indeed.  This relaxed response reflects the fact that both major political parties have promised continuity for business and the fact that ultimately it is the broad economic factors which drive stockmarkets not the actions of our transient politicians.

The expectation of a smooth transition of power, regardless of the election outcome, has helped to maintain a sense of stability across British asset classes. Indeed the current market view is that conditions in the UK are gradually improving. The FTSE 100's flirtation with record highs in May and the pound's resilience underscore confidence in the economy's underlying fundamentals. Moreover, the robust earnings growth witnessed across various sectors, particularly in the mid-cap space, suggests that corporate Britain is weathering the inflationary headwinds with poise. As the political dust settles, investors are likely to focus on the incoming economic data and the Bank of England's policy signals to guide their asset allocation decisions.

Inflation moderates, but Bank of England remains vigilant

While inflation in the UK remains above the Bank of England's target, the April consumer price index's deceleration to 2.3% offers a glimmer of hope that the worst of the price pressures may be in the rearview mirror. The stickiness in services inflation, which held steady at 5.9%, serves as a reminder that the path to price stability is rarely smooth. However, the central bank's resolute stance and the economy's underlying resilience suggest that a more benign inflationary environment could be on the horizon. This moderation in inflation, coupled with the potential for a growth-oriented agenda under a new government following the July snap election, could set the stage for a more conducive backdrop for businesses and investors alike.

    Investors embrace opportunities amidst challenges

In navigating the current landscape, portfolio managers are adopting a balanced approach that seeks to capture opportunities while mitigating risks. While inflation and debt concerns persist, the strength in corporate earnings and the economy's surprising resilience offer a counterpoint. Defensive sectors and international diversification remain important tools for managing volatility, but investors are also finding compelling prospects in UK mid-cap stocks and European equities. In the fixed income space, active managers are adding value by identifying attractive credit opportunities while navigating the challenges posed by rising government bond supply. The key to successful portfolio construction in this environment lies in maintaining a long-term perspective while remaining agile enough to capitalize on short-term dislocations.

As investors look ahead, the moderation in inflation, the strength in corporate earnings, and the potential for a pro-growth agenda under a new government provide reasons for optimism. While challenges remain, the UK economy's underlying resilience and the market's ability to look beyond short-term noise suggest that opportunities abound for astute investors. By maintaining a diversified approach, focusing on fundamentals, and remaining attuned to the evolving economic landscape, investors can position their portfolios to benefit from the ongoing recovery in global growth.
