Community mourns family who drowned at Shoreham
The tragic deaths of four members of the same family, who got into difficulties off Shoreham beach on 18 August, sparked an outpouring of public grief.
Some local community groups have met to honour those who lost their lives and to comfort each other in their own unique ways. Kayakers gathered in a circle on the sea to scatter flowers.
Karen Bamford, an independent celebrant who lives in Shoreham, introduced a specially arranged reflective breathwork session on the beach for a group of likeminded people who regularly turn up at 8am on a Saturday morning to attend a free class offered by instructor Matt Bagwell.
Hassan El-Khawas, aged 55, his partner Zeina Alayn, aged 32, and their daughters, Sahra, who was 14, and Sarjar, who was only six, died while visiting Shoreham from their home in London.
“We may not have known this family personally, but they shared our breath, our capacity to love and an enjoyment of the beach,” said Karen.
“When people come together in this way, they illustrate the depth of human compassion for strangers.
“We offered our collective silence, our thoughts and our deepest empathy to those whose lives ended too soon.”
