Hove care home to benefit from £1.3 million expansion by Pilbeam

Wavertree House Care Home in Hove is set to increase its capacity and enhance facilities for residents and staff as part of a £1.3 million expansion being delivered by Pilbeam Construction.

The Sussex contractor is creating eight additional bedrooms, a large lounge, an assisted bathroom and other facilities, enabling the care home to welcome more residents and provide additional space tailored to different care needs.

Wavertree House, on Somerhill Road in Hove, currently provides residential accommodation for up to 41 people across three floors. It delivers nursing and personal care for older people with a variety of health needs, including residents who have lost their sight.

Alan Corbett, managing director at Pilbeam Construction, said: “We’re delighted to have been appointed to deliver this transformative project at Wavertree House. This will enable the home to support more older people in the local community while enhancing the facilities available to existing residents and staff.

“We’ll be expanding the existing building while the care home remains open, so careful planning will be essential to minimise disruption to residents and staff. Our team has extensive experience of working in live care environments and understands the importance of carrying out the work sensitively, safely and with as little impact as possible on the day-to-day running of the home.”

Work at Wavertree House began on 5 October and is due to complete in August 2027.

As part of the project, Pilbeam will erect a temporary roof across the site before removing sections of the existing roof finishes and structure and constructing a new roof and dormers.

The team will also install new mechanical and electrical services and new finishes across much of the second floor.

To support the works at height, Pilbeam will install a gantry system to reduce manual handling of heavy materials and enable the team to carry out the work safely and efficiently.

Oshi Weissbraun, director of Wavertree Care, said: “We’re pleased to be working with Pilbeam Construction on this major project at Wavertree House. The firm’s strong track record of working in care homes and its understanding of the sensitivities involved in working in a live environment made Pilbeam the right choice for this development.

“The expansion will enable us to welcome more residents while enhancing our facilities and providing additional spaces designed around the needs of the people we care for.”

Pilbeam will work with quantity surveyor Duncan Tibbitts at Gradient Consultants, which is the CDM principal designer of the project, as well as architect Justin Cooper at Moshin Cooper to deliver the work.

Pilbeam Construction specialises in projects in live and sensitive environments and has delivered schemes for care homes and other healthcare facilities across the South East.
