Are you ready for the Street Velodrome?

14 June 2016 12:22 PM | Deleted user

The countdown is on - in just two short weeks, Worthing Street Velodrome will open in Beach House Grounds.  Are you ready? “When Worthing Borough Council decided to bring the Street Velodrome to the town for 2015, we underestimated the impact that this free event would have,” comments Councillor Bryan Turner, the Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration. “The ballots for track time were over subscribed, the prom cycle attracted more people than we imagined and the buzz was absolutely phenomenal.  With such a success under our belts, it was only natural to make the weekend even bigger and better for this year.” With just a fortnight left until the event starts, the Borough Council’s organising team have been hard at work putting the finishing touches to the music stage, trade stands and catering village which will pop-up around the Street Velodrome during its residence in Beach House Grounds on the first weekend of July.  “This is just the sort of event which we want to see in Worthing,” Councillor Daniel Humphreys, Leader of Worthing Borough Council, adds.  “We proved the idea last year, now we’re back with another free-to-take-part, family-friendly, event making the most of our beautiful open space and beachfront.  “We’re grateful for the support of all our sponsors who have shown their faith not only in the event itself, but also in our ability to deliver yet another brilliant weekend for the town. “I can’t wait until that first klaxon goes off and the racing starts!” Sponsors Lancing College alongside Southern Rail and Worthing Homes have championed bringing Street Velodrome back to Worthing this July.  Through their support, the Borough Council has been able to expand the event to three days, offering a dedicated Schools’ Day on 1 July, followed by an expanded catering and entertainment offer on the 2nd and 3rd July. On Saturday 2nd July, event-goers can get onto the track and test their skills against the clock in a day of free first-come-first-serve racing.  All equipment and training will be provided by the Street Velodrome Pro Rider teams, so all you need to do is simply steel your nerves, get on the track and wait for the signal! The Sunday Peloton is also making a return this year, organised by local Worthing resident Jeremy Strutt (you can read a short interview with Jeremy on the Worthing Street Velodrome website - http://worthingstreetvelodrome.co.uk/interview-with-jeremy-strutt/) - what more excuse do you need to get on your bike and cruise to the Street Velodrome grounds on Sunday 3rd July? All of the details for the event schedule can be found on www.WorthingStreetVelodrome.co.uk - and the whole thing can be followed on social media.  Don’t forget to join in the social fun throughout the weekend on Twitter, using #WorthingSV16
