Coast to Capital has ambitious goals to increase, significantly, the number of businesses which trade internationally and held this event for organisations that work to support businesses in trading overseas.

The conference was presented with initial findings from new research commissioned by Coast to Capital about the patterns of current international trade in the Coast to Capital area. Participants heard that findings from a recent survey of businesses in the area suggests that 10% of Coast to Capital businesses are active exporters and generate around £13.6bn - about 42% of the GVA for the Coast to Capital area.

    Broadband - Register your support!

Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership is asking businesses to help the push for better broadband by registering their need for improved broadband services.

Encouraging businesses to register their need for improved broadband services is just one way in which Coast to Capital continues to lobby for better broadband provision across its area. The more businesses that register their support for better, faster broadband, the more likely it is that broadband suppliers will invest in the Coast to Capital area.

Leaders and key representatives from business and business membership organisations, the public and voluntary sectors, were welcomed by Coast to Capital Chairman, John Peel, to the second meeting of Coast to Capital's Forum at the American Express Community Stadium in Brighton on Thursday 8th March 2012.

Alex Williamson, the Board member leading on broadband in the Coast to Capital area, introduced Bill Murphy, Managing Director of Next Generation Access, BT Group, who gave an inspiring presentation about how businesses are already using improved broadband to expand and develop new ways of working and the ways in which these new technologies will help to support Coast to Capital's two key themes of Enterprise and International Trade.

Board member, Steve Allen's presentation on Delivering Economic Growth outlined some of the ground breaking work that's being developed to drive forward the three current strands of activity: business growth through entrepreneurship; tackling areas and groups with low levels of enterprise and young people and enterprise.

Phil Jones, Coast to Capital Board Member responsible enterprise said, "Innovation drives high growth business success. We have all the elements in the Coast to Capital area to support business innovation including entrepreneurial expertise, great universities and high quality support organisations. We need to support the development of intelligent engagement between them and to position Coast to Capital as one of the best places in the UK to start or expand or bring high growth businesses."

Roger Paterson, representing West Sussex's Rural Partnership spoke of the opportunities for partnerships to work with Coast to Capital to improve rural areas and stressed the importance the rural economy plays.

Tim Wates, Vice Chairman talked about the "place agenda" and how the Growing Places fund will be able to help to push forward infrastructure projects that have stalled.

Delegates participated in discussions about the impacts of all these areas of work on their organisations and geographical locations and the opportunities for development. Their many excellent ideas will help to shape the implementation of future work in this area.

Gary Peters, Founder of BrightonandHoveJobs.com and GatwickDiamondJobs.com said, "This has been a fantastic opportunity to see how Coast to Capital can work with other organisations to develop enterprise and boost jobs in the local economy."

Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership held its International Trade conference on Tuesday 20th March 2012 at the Arora Hotel, Crawley. Coast to Capital has ambitious goals to increase, significantly, the number of businesses which trade internationally and held this event for organisations that work to support businesses in trading overseas.

The conference was presented with initial findings from new research commissioned by Coast to Capital about the patterns of current international trade in the Coast to Capital area – sectors, characteristics and locations, all specific to our area and the prospects for the future.

Participants heard that findings from a recent survey of businesses in the area suggests that 10% of Coast to Capital businesses are active exporters and generate around £13.6bn - about 42% of the GVA for the Coast to Capital area.
Businesses themselves are optimistic for the future, with a rising proportion of them expecting trade to increase over the next 12 months.

Charles Carter, from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), congratulated Coast to Capital on their initiative to encourage SMEs to consider exporting.  During his talk he encouraged businesses to use the ICAEW Business Advice Service for support and advice.

Iain Shepherd, Coast to Capital Board member responsible for Internationalisation, said:

"I was absolutely delighted by the positive and enthusiastic response from both public and private sector organizations to engage with Coast to Capital in the delivery of our Internationalisation agenda.  The conference demonstrated that our ambitious targets were both realistic and achievable. Coast to Capital wants to double the number of businesses that are regular and fully active international traders. It is a big target – much bigger than what we have seen before – and it will take a concerted effort by all public, private and third sector bodies who work with businesses – to make progress.”

The Coast to Capital International Trade conference was attended by representatives of accountancy and legal firms, specialist service providers, banks, chambers of commerce, trade bodies, UKTI, universities, Gatwick Airport and local authorities.

Coast to Capital’s Board will be discussing the new research and the feedback from the conference and the next steps will be communicated in due course.

Earlier this year, Adur District Council and Lancing Parish Council jointly commissioned consultants BDP, to prepare a Vision Document for Lancing Village Centre and Seafront.  This document, once completed, will give a clear direction for the regeneration of Lancing over the short, medium and long term.

Residents and local interest groups have been really interested in the process so far and all comments and feedback received during the last few months has been taken into account in the preparation of the draft Vision Document.

BDP has now prepared an exhibition for people to visit and give further feedback on.  The exhibition is very visually appealing and easy to understand so people are invited to come along and take a look.  BDP will be at the Lancing Parish Hall with the exhibition on Friday 13th April from 3pm to 8pm and Saturday 14th April from 12pm to 6pm, local Councillors and Council Officers will also be on hand to answer queries and gather comments.  The exhibition will then stay in place for the following week so that people can still come along and leave their comments on feedback slips which will be supplied.

Cllr Jim Funnell, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at Adur District Council said, “The Vision for Lancing is coming along really well and we are pleased that the people of Lancing have been very aspiration and vocal about their hopes for the future of the Village.  The Vision Document, once completed, will give a very clear picture for the regeneration of Lancing.  The Parish, Adur and West Sussex Councils as well as private developers will know very clearly where to direct investment.”

So please come along on 13th or 14th April, see the draft plans and have your say in how Lancing can become a truly 21st Century Village.  You can also comment direct to the Regeneration Team by emailing regeneration@adur-worthing.gov.uk or follow the Regeneration Team on Facebook.  The final report will be formally launched on 24th May 2012.
