Cooking runs in Kenny’s family; he says that his Mum (who had a wonderful cameo in the MasterChef final) is a fantastic cook & that he’s been cooking alongside her since he was a child. His Dad instilled in him the value of being able to cook a mean Full English. A great life lesson!

Despite being an experienced home cook, getting to the semi – finals was a fairy tale moment for Worthing based Kenny. “No one prepares you for how hard it is in that kitchen working to strict times under the watchful eyes of John and Gregg. They are cracking guys and it was great to get the chance to cook for them both.”

Whitebox UK are climbing Mount Snowdon, in Wales, barefoot for Coastal West Sussex Mind because Mental illness affects 16 million people in the UK.

Click here to have a look at the Just Giving Page

Whitebox are dedicated to helping our local community and this year have chosen to support Coastal West Sussex Mind.

“Coastal West Sussex Mind are an independent local mental health charity working in West Sussex. We offer mental health services, along with associated training and support. We also work in communities to raise awareness and challenge stigma and discrimination. Our services support young people, adults, older adults, carers and families affected by mental health problems.”

    Why Mental Health

Mental illness affects 16 million people in the UK , that’s one in four adults. This ranges from anxiety and depression to alcohol dependence, substance misuse and psychosis.  75% of mental illnesses start before a child reaches their 18 birthday.

It can take a decade for many young people to receive help after first showing symptoms. Opportunities to help are often missed until they reach ‘crisis’, causing children to self-harm, become suicidal, be violent and aggressive or drop out of school.

Whitebox carried out a survey of our 2500 twitter followers, mostly tradesmen, and found that 67% have suffered with some form of mental health issue. The problem is massive and people, young and old, need our help now.

    The Challenge:

Following on from last years successful fundraising for Sussex Community Foundation and spurred on by our Business in the Community Award the team at Whitebox will be embarking on their toughest challenge yet. A 1,085-metre (3560 ft) ascent of Snowdon in Wales. What, I hear you say? People climb Snowdon every day. So, to add to the challenge there is an important twist, we will be making the climb barefoot.

Arriving in Snowdonia on Friday 15th June 2018 the team will ‘wild camp’ overnight and embark on their barefoot climb early on Saturday 16th. Wild camping again on the Saturday night before completing the challenge by riding the “fastest zipline in the world”, reaching speeds of over 100mph.

    Why barefoot?

Each of our feet contain 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Plus, the soles of your feet have over 20,000 nerve endings. In fact, there are more nerve endings in your feet than any comparable size on your body.

Our feet are the base for our whole body and by going barefoot, it allows you to ‘ground’ with the earth and absorb free electrons directly through the soles of your feet.

The planet has its own natural charge, and we seem to do better when we’re in direct contact with it.

Walking barefoot strengthens muscles and joints within the foot and ankle, making you more stable, improving overall muscle alignment and increasing proprioception and balance.

Being more grounded also increases antioxidants within the body and boosts immunity. It reduces inflammation, stress and improves sleep. All these factors lead to a healthy brain. And a reduction in stress can help with some mental health issues.

Link to Mind’s page all about stress - https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/tips-for-everyday-living/stress/#.WqZ1XOjFJPY

we ask you to join us in supporting this incredible charity and help many people overcome their mental health issues.

Please donate what you can, every little helps, really!

Adur council unlocks key riverside development site

A radical vision to open up Shoreham’s riverfront to cyclists and pedestrians while reducing the risk of flooding will take a major step forward thanks to Adur District Council and Sussex Yacht Club.

As part of a wide-reaching plan, the local authority wants to transform the industrial units along the River Adur’s Western Harbour Arm into new homes and workspaces with an expansive waterfront promenade.

However, one of the obstacles in delivering this has been the location of the current Sussex Yacht Club (SYC) building in Brighton Road, which is regarded as a key weakness in flood defences.

To reduce the risk of flooding to the town and neighbouring properties while encouraging private investment in the area, Adur District Council has now struck a deal with the club. This will see the local authority buy some of the club's land with the proceeds being used by SYC to construct a new clubhouse.

The local authority will then demolish the existing building, which is at the northern end of the Adur Ferry Bridge, and build new flood defences along with a riverside cycle and pedestrian route.

The project, which is costing up to £4.7 million, will transform the surrounding area for thousands of residents and visitors to the town.

Councillor Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council, said: “We have been working towards - and succeeding - on a vision to transform the district for a number of years. The regeneration of the industrial riverside and improved flood defences is at the heart of bringing more investment into area.

“Key to all of this is the Sussex Yacht Club site, which is why I’m delighted we have been able to work with the community and partners to move this forward.

“The end result will be a major step forward in a renaissance of Shoreham, which will transform the area and the lifestyle of the people that live and work in the town.”

A report on the Sussex Yacht Club project will be presented to Adur & Worthing Councils’ Joint Strategic Committee (JSC) next week (5th June, 2018).

Councillors will be informed that the scheme is part of the wider-reaching Shoreham Harbour Joint Area Action Plan, which will see hundreds of homes created along the Western Harbour Arm.

The majority of flood defences in this area will be provided by private sector investment as individual sites are developed. However, the report to councillors says "Sussex Yacht Club as a members club is unlikely to have a commercial incentive to carry out this work".

The project will be funded by £3.5 million from the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership and up to £1.2 million from the Environment Agency.

Councillors at JSC will be informed that Heads of Terms for the project have now been agreed. The next step is for contracts to be exchanged and consents to be agreed with work potentially starting later this year.

The flood prevention work, along with footpath and cycleway, could be complete by 2021, subject to planning permission being granted.

    Seafront shelter plans revealed

This is the first image of plans to turn a Worthing seafront shelter into a bright new restaurant.

Bistrot Pierre, who have premises in south Wales, Birmingham, Nottingham and Bath, have been granted a long-term lease by Worthing Borough Council to convert and expand the structure opposite West Buildings into a restaurant overlooking the beach.

The image was released as developer Nextcolour Ltd presented plans to the public today (Wednesday 30th May) at St Pauls in Chapel Road, Worthing.

Residents and businesses were among those to view the proposals. The next step is for a planning application to be submitted.

The event, which was run by Worthing-based ECE Planning, also allowed members of the public to ask questions about the scheme.

James Morse, director of Nextcolour, said: "We are delighted to be part of the rejuvenation of Worthing seafront. Worthing is a great town and we hope our development will be seen positively as making it a great regional destination."

Councillor Kevin Jenkins, Worthing Borough Council's Executive Member for Regeneration, said: "As a council we are determined to drive through significant improvements to our seafront offer. We will not sit still but want to modernise our offer while not forgetting its traditional delights."

A second shelter - near Steyne Gardens - was also offered to would-be-developers last year. A decision on the winning bidder is expected in the coming weeks.
