    Peer Mentoring taster session

What is Peer Mentoring? The Peer Mentoring Groups consist of 8-12 business owners from different business areas who are willing to learn from and support each other by sharing their expertise and varied skill sets in a confidential environment. All the programmes have at their core the concept of Action Learning – this is ‘learning by doing’, focusing on group members’ real business challenges and identifying practical actions they can take to solve them. An experienced facilitator guides the group and holds members accountable.

    What are the benefits?
    •    Thinking time to work on (rather than in) the business
    •    The opportunity to explore challenges in a confidential environment
    •    A diverse pool of wisdom and expertise to draw on
    •    A unique blend of challenge and support from peers
    •    Ideas for new products and services
    •    Practical solutions to specific problems
    •    Potential cost savings
    •    Developing management skills
    •    Building relationships, trust and mutual understanding
    •    Creating an environment of continuous learning

How will Peer Mentoring help me?
This programme is for business owners that are looking to grow and develop their business. The content of each meeting is determined exclusively by members themselves including the provision of 6 bespoke workshops as identified and requested by the group. Each member has two scheduled time-slots for introducing their business to the group and reviewing their progress as well as monthly opportunities to present a business challenge for Action Learning sessions. Groups meet for 3 hours once a month over the course of a year.

This is what a previous group member said  about the programme: I first decided to give Peer Mentoring a go when I was a sole trader looking to expand my business. The group gave me a safe place to air my worries and a monthly 'board of directors' to hold me accountable to achieving my business goals bit by bit. Even years later I have strong relationships with my fellow peers that I still use today. The Chamber's programme helped me hold on to my business and change it so it suited me better. In fact, I don't think I'd even be in business without signing up to Peer Mentoring. It has to be one of the best business decisions I have ever made.

Another Chamber initiative to support you and your business! Since 2012, Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce has been offering highly successful peer-to-peer mentoring group programmes to over 60 members and is planning it’s next group.

            Masterclass: Difficult Conversations

            You’ll know it’s a difficult conversation because:

            • You procrastinate and put it off
            • You'll be relieved they haven't turned up or are off sick
            • Your stomach is churning
            • You had trouble sleeping the night before ‘the chat’
            • Your heart is racing
            • You get tongue tide
            • You avoid bumping into them
            • It's taking up too much space and time in your head

Let’s learn how to calm all of this down, take control and feel confident and even ‘relaxed’ when dealing with difficult situations and people.

            Stages of Mastery

            1. Why you feel the way you do and why this is important to understand; move from dread to calm competence

2.Mind reading. What are they thinking and doing; exploring assumptions and reality

3.Putting it all together in a strategy that works – using the Flourish L E A P system

            When you walk away

            1. You will know how to manage your own emotions and thoughts so that you can regain control and lead the conversation.

2.You will be better able to assess the other person to plan the conversation more competently.

3.You will have some strategies in influencing others and the Flourish L E A P system.

How to make the most of the training

1.Instead of note taking – tool take; make a list of short phrases that remind you of a specific technique you want to use in the future. This is then an easy to access toolkit

            2. Identify as many low risk situations in which to practice the tools, choose small conversations that you are not dreading where you want to make a shift or change. This could be at work, at home, with friends, in community groups or even with common interest groups like sports or book clubs.

            3. Commit to the mastery changes you need to make (we will look at them in detail within the training)
