A workshop focusing on managing teams using empathy, authority and the use of emotional intelligence.

A focused session for delegates to consider what it means to communicate with clarity, confidence, and respect. We will explore the art of assertive leadership: how to speak up, set boundaries, and handle challenging conversations without damaging relationships.

What to expect?

The session focuses on the communication tools required to be assertive yet empathetic in leadership and how to use them with confidence.  Participants will consider principles of assertiveness, learn how to apply them in workplace scenarios, and develop strategies to communicate with clarity and respect. The goal is to build self-awareness and practical skills enabling attendees to handle difficult conversations, set healthy boundaries, and foster a culture of open, honest dialogue.

The workshop will give participants the tools to:

• Understand what assertiveness is and how it differs from passivity or aggression.
• Recognise the role of assertiveness in effective, respectful leadership.
• Identify common barriers to assertive communication and how to overcome them.
• Apply practical frameworks to structure conversations that may require assertiveness.
• Use confident, clear language to give feedback, say “no,” and express organisational needs.
• Reflect on their own assertiveness style and identify areas for growth.
•  Practise assertive communication through real life leadership style scenarios.

This is intended to be an interactive workshop where active discussion, probing questions, participant insights and “what ifs?” are welcome throughout.  

Who is it by?

Richard Hamlin is the owner and director of Define Leadership Ltd, a training and development consultancy.

He delivers focused training and coaching aimed at realising leadership potential, managing professional conflict and empowering workforces to achieve excellence. He works with individuals and teams from organisations across all sectors, including police forces, the military, local authorities, health & social services and several high-profile learning institutions in both Europe and North America.

Peer Mentoring Taster Session

Our Peer Mentoring programme has been running successfully for 13 years. Each group is made up of business owners from a variety of industry sectors and skills, brought together in a confidential and professionally facilitated environment.

What is Peer Mentoring? The Peer Mentoring Groups consist of 8-12 business owners from different business areas who are willing to learn from and support each other by sharing their expertise and varied skill sets in a confidential environment. All the programmes have at their core the concept of Action Learning – this is ‘learning by doing’, focusing on group members’ real business challenges and identifying practical actions they can take to solve them. An experienced facilitator guides the group and holds members accountable.

The group gave me a safe place to air my worries and a monthly 'board of directors' to hold me accountable to achieving my business goals bit by bit.
